The ideal lawn with a robotic lawnmower: myth or reality?
Spring, it seems, has just begun, and the long-awaited summer time is already on the doorstep! Ahead are hot days outside the city, cozy picnics in the shade of trees, active games with children in the fresh air and romantic “dates” on the porch of the house overlooking the garden ... For gardeners, summer is also a time of active work, caring for the territory and maintaining the beauty of plants , flower beds and lawn! Whether it is possible to keep the lawn in perfect condition without doing it for almost a minute will be discussed below.
Today, more and more robotic equipment appears in everyday life, ready to replace our cleaning hours, labor with a pleasant pastime with family, friends, or, for example, a book. Gardening is no exception. Automatic irrigation systems are a vivid confirmation of this. And if they are no longer a rarity for many residents of our country, then robotic lawn mowers are a fairly new phenomenon in the world of gardening. And as everything is new, it raises a lot of questions, the main one of which is: do these robots really work effectively? The perfect lawn with a robotic lawnmower: myth or reality? Let's try to figure it out.
What is a robotic lawn mower and what do manufacturers usually promise?
A robotic lawn mower is a battery-powered lawn care product that takes care of your lawn while you are resting or not at all. Producers guarantee an excellent lawn, work of the devices in various weather conditions and even on slopes. The equipment is equipped with a special program in which the owner enters all the necessary data and tasks for the robot. And then he independently proceeds to work according to the plan and returns to his charging place at the end of the session. You can program that the robot mows the lawn only on weekdays or at night, then during the day and on weekends nothing will distract you from your rest. Robots differ in size, battery power, equipment, availability of additional functions (for example, mowing the edges of the lawn) and all these factors, of course, must be taken into account when choosing one or another robot model for your site.
What are the nuances? What is important to consider before starting the robot?
Firstly, before the very start of work, site preparation is required. The preparation includes the installation of a base station of the robot with a connection to the power supply, laying of the loop of the boundary and guide cable, on which the mower is guided during the mowing process. It is also important to take into account that the lawn must still be even, slopes are acceptable, but mounds and holes will not allow the robot to effectively cope with its task. At the same time, the grass should not be high. The robotic lawnmower works according to the principle of “more is more”. It needs to be run regularly, it removes not a lot of grass, but just due to the frequency it keeps the “green carpet” in a well-groomed form, each time helping it to become thicker and thicker. The robots leave the grass cuttings on the lawn as mulch, which rots and turns into fertilizer.
The main advantages of a robotic lawn mower
In fact, it turns out that it is not difficult to comply with all the requirements for the operation of a robotic lawn mower. The only disadvantage of the equipment is its price (on average, from 50 to 100 thousand rubles). But it will pay off with interest, and you can see for yourself by testing the robot on your site.
Let's highlight the main advantages of a robotic lawn mower, why it is still worth considering buying such a smart “friend” if possible:
- Saving personal time and effort due to the automated operation of the device;
- Ease of programming and control, as well as regulation of the cutting height;
- As a result - the perfect condition of the lawn on a permanent basis;
- Robots are not afraid of water, so they can be safely washed with a hose, cleaning the body, blades and wheels from dirt, dust and grass residues, and left outside throughout the season. In case of rain, robots equipped with special sensors go to their station so as not to mow the lawn with mulching in bad weather.
Today there are several major manufacturers of robotic lawn mowers. For example, the German brand GARDENA has been developing this direction since 2012 and for the 2019 season has presented a new model GARDENA SILENO life. Its blades cut the grass neatly, and thanks to the SensorCut system, the mower follows a special trajectory without creating lawn stripes. The cutting height can be easily adjusted without the need for additional tools. The device is equipped with an intuitive interface, complex calculations and programming are not required. The model is available in three versions with recommended cutting areas from 750 to 1250 sq. m.
Based on this data and the results of testing the device, we can confidently say that the ideal lawn with a robotic lawnmower is not a myth, but a reality! The world of high technologies is developing rapidly, on the basis of unique developments, gadgets and equipment are created that we need in our everyday life. And they make our life more comfortable and joyful. This is so wonderful - after all, there is nothing better for science than to become an applied form, a part of people's daily life!

Types of lawns
We are accustomed to the fact that a lawn is necessarily a grass covering the soil. It can be used for flower beds, rabatki, alpine slides and other decorative elements. This is not entirely true. There are at least three more varieties of flowering lawns. They are undoubtedly more decorative, but you will hardly be able to walk on them.
They are based on cereals, but significantly "diluted" with perennial or annual flowering plants. They are selected so that flowering takes place throughout the entire growing season - from mid-spring to late autumn. Depending on what kind of plants are included in the composition, there are three types of flowering lawns.
Already from the name it is clear that the composition of the plants that can be seen in a real meadow. Only rarely in full composition and in strictly measured proportions. Added to the cereals are traditional grassland dwellers such as clover, chamomile, daisy, monotonous loosestrife, yarrow and other flowering or ornamental foliage plants. Despite the abundance of flowers, the main ones are herbs.
The meadow lawn is highly decorative. Different plants bloom at different times and the species is constantly changing, the palette changes
It is clear that you will not often mow such beauty, but once or twice a season you have to cut it for renewal and rejuvenation. Plants are perennial, therefore, with proper watering, they quickly restore decorativeness. Sowing the entire territory with such a mixture is not always appropriate, but some zones are very pleasing to the eye.
It differs in that the flowers are used for annuals. Therefore, such a lawn is not cut at all. Grains are picked up by undersized ones, there are fewer of them than flowers. Flowers dominate the Moorish lawn. Both in height and in quantity (look at the photo).
It looks like a Moorish lawn - a riot of colors all season
They are selected so that the flowering is as long as possible. Usually in the composition of poppy seed, cornflower, calendula, matiola, large-flowered flax, escholzia and other bright annuals.
This is a completely unusual lawn in composition, consisting of ground cover plants. Sowing them in open ground is a futile business, growing seedlings is a long time, and buying ready-made is expensive. Therefore, a non-grass lawn has been grown for more than one year or two: plants are planted in small quantities, waiting for them to grow. It is most difficult to grow such a lawn with your own hands: the results of labor are visible only after a few years, but the effort is worth it.
Unconventional lawn - ungrassy made from ground cover arsthenia
In the opinion of a layman, different types of grass lawns are almost the same: the color may be slightly different. But besides a different shade of greens, they have different characteristics: one can be walked on, others are contraindicated, the sowing rate is different, different care is required. Naturally, different herbs with different characteristics are used.
The most resistant to trampling, you can walk on it. Grasses are selected from tough, rough-looking. But it is easier to care for it, less often to weed, some mistakes, which are often made when self-sowing, are not visible. An ordinary lawn is an excellent choice for a summer cottage.
This is one of the most decorative and ceremonial lawns. Differs in high decorativeness, herbs are selected delicate, beautiful colors. The grass is low and dense, with proper care it looks just gorgeous. Such lawns are arranged in open places, but where no one will walk: too soft grains will not withstand such a load. Therefore, the parterre lawn (see photo) is sown where they only walk along the paths.
The parterre lawn is one of the most decorative and "smart"
It is planted on the slopes. As part of its herbs, which have an extensive root system that can keep the soil from washing out. The decorativeness of such a coating is average, but it performs its main purpose well. A special lawn can be planted on a slope leading to a river or lake, if there is one on your site.
The mixture is more complex - in addition to traditional varieties of cereals, there are special ones that are more resistant to abrasion. The decorativeness of a sports lawn is not its main characteristic, therefore even a very well-groomed lawn looks much worse than an ordinary one, and even more so a parterre lawn. But it has a very high abrasion resistance.
Due to the use of special herbs, its cost is higher, more difficult to care for. Therefore, sowing with such a mixture is those zones that will be actively exploited: a playground, an area where they will actively walk - near a gazebo, a sports ground, a swing. The rest of the area is most often set aside for an ordinary lawn.
On a playground or playground, it is better to sow a sports lawn
For this type of coating, mixtures are not bought, no work is carried out. They simply cut the grasses that are. Most often, a natural lawn is left in the garden: it protects the soil well from drying out, and the requirements for decorativeness are not very high here. Plants that are too large and do not fit the desired picture are removed manually. The rest in the process of haircuts become smaller and smaller, forming sod of different colors.
Disadvantages of microclover lawn
But the microclover lawn has its drawbacks. Although, it depends on how you look at them.
The first thing that opponents of such a lawn pay attention to is flowering. Many are afraid that walking on a blooming clover might step on a bumblebee or a bee. This is true. But, unfortunately, bees today have become rare guests in our gardens, just like bumblebees. And even more so, if the lawn is not intended for children to play, it makes no sense to be afraid of them. In addition, flowers can be cut by regular mowing. However, if you leave them, at least at the end of the season, the seeds will spill out onto the lawn, and you will not have to renew it - it will renew itself.
By the way, in landscape design, microclover bloom is considered one of its main advantages. It blooms with varying intensity, but constantly, throughout the summer.
The second is cost. Clover lawn is considered to be an expensive option. But the truth is that if you buy seeds not in a garden center, but in a specialized store, their cost can be three times lower. Plus, we add the lack of constant dressing, without which the grass lawn is not able to recover in spring and after regular mowing. Less watering and mowing - and the cost of microclover becomes the same as that of a traditional grass lawn.
Monotone. This is another complaint about clover lawn. But only those who saw him exclusively in pictures. In fact, thanks to the constant bloom and curly airy green cushion of three-lobed clover leaves, the microclover lawn can be described as gentle, a little naive, reminiscent of childhood, but not boring.
All these characteristics visually erase the boundaries of the lawn and hide the strict forms of the site, which is a big plus if the site is intended for recreation.

Perfect lawn in the country. 50 easy steps
Many people associate the lawn with prim Victorian England. Smooth lawn, cut a blade of grass to a blade of grass, is consonant with the character of the inhabitants of Foggy Albion. However, in fact, the lawn appeared much earlier. Grassy lawns are already mentioned in ancient texts. The medieval book The Virtues of Country Life gives readers detailed advice on how to grow the perfect lawn. True, in those days, the technology for creating lawns was very different from modern ones. For example, there were no specialized grass mixtures for lawns. The lawn was planted with wild meadow sod.
Lawns adorned the territories of Spanish, Italian and French medieval castles. But the classic English lawn, judging by the sources, appeared only in the early 17th century.
The British philosopher, historian and politician Francis Bacon is considered one of the creators of the traditional English lawn. At the same time, there are textbooks for growing lawns. In the XVIII-XIX centuries. lawns, complemented by trees, shrubs and ponds, came into vogue.
At the beginning of the XIX century. Edving Budding invented the first cylindrical lawn mower. Now it's much easier to keep your lawn in perfect condition.
However, the question was still acute, which plants are most suitable for the lawn.
The solution was found by American scientists. The growing popularity of the game of golf pushed them to undertake research. In the United States, experimental sites began to appear everywhere, planted with various types of plants. The study of the turf has borne fruit. Field grass and fescue were recognized as exemplary lawn grasses. These plants remain the most popular grass for lawns to this day.
The story of the lawn doesn't end there. To this day, lawn maintenance tools are being improved, new, more resilient lawn grass seeds are emerging, and new methods are being developed to create the perfect lawn.
1. How to choose a method of creating a lawn
There are a lot of varieties of lawn, but there are only two ways to create them. You can lay the finished turf (the so-called roll lawn), or you can sow the area with seeds. Each of these methods has its own advantages and disadvantages. Strictly speaking, there is a third way: laying synthetic turf. This decorative coating does not require cutting, watering or careful maintenance. If artificial grass can serve as a worthy substitute for living plants in your opinion, this is the perfect option for you. Otherwise, you will have to choose between a rolled lawn and a sowing lawn, weighing all their pros and cons.
• Do not forget about the financial side of the issue: ready-made turf is several times more expensive than lawn grass seeds.
• If you want to get a smooth, beautiful lawn quickly and immediately, lay a ready-made turf. The sowing lawn will turn into a "green carpet" only after the seeds have sprouted, and this takes several weeks, during which the lawn also needs to be looked after.
• If you have a busy, unpredictable schedule, and you are not sure when you will be able to carve out the time to create a lawn, your choice is a seeding lawn. Seeds can be sown throughout the summer cottage season: from early spring to late autumn. Failed to tackle the lawn this season? The seeds can be sown next year. With a ready-made turf, this will not work: the rolled lawn must be laid strictly within the terms recommended by the manufacturer. Usually this period is from 3 to 5 days.
• Remember that on one side of the scale the amount of effort and time spent on creating the lawn, and on the other - the durability of the green covering. The sowing lawn grows for a long time, but sowing seeds is many times easier than laying a ready-made sod. Delivery and laying of a rolled lawn is a laborious process that requires large physical costs. Heavy, bulky rolls must be spread and tamped with extreme care. At the same time, a rolled lawn is less durable than a sowing lawn.
• The costs of preparing the site for roll and sowing lawns are approximately the same. In both cases, the site must be leveled and weed-free. Take care of the quality of the land in advance. Prepare fertile soil for the seed lawn. For finished turf, check that the topsoil of your plot and the soil of the roll are similar in composition.
