Forcing green onions in winter in an apartment

Winter conveyor of green onions in a city apartment

Our family provides itself with vitamin green onions throughout the winter. We grow it from the beginning of the heating season in a city apartment, and without land, any soil, in two simple ways that do not require special costs.

To get a green feather, we use our onion grown in the summer in the garden. For about forty years in your gardening, you have been planting an unnamed variety, which is popularly called "family". This name is due to the fact that this variety produces a large number of bulbs in each nest.

Having planted one onion at the end of spring, you can collect a multiply increased number of bulbs by autumn, it happens that there are up to 20 of them in the nest. True, in my beds I limit their number, pinching off the extra ones, leaving 6-8 pieces. As a result, I get bulbs weighing up to 50 grams.

This bow looks a little like shallot varieties Siberian yellow, it is also yellow. However, when we compared our onion with the Siberian yellow shallots, which, by the way, is recommended for cultivation in the soil and climatic conditions of our zone, it turned out that the folk variety is "family" in terms of a number of indicators (yield of turnip, feathers, etc. some others) is superior to the Siberian yellow variety and other varieties.

Perhaps the best results of our "family" bow are explained by the use of the technique developed over many years. soil preparation and growing onions, which allows us to annually receive from 3.4 to 4.1 kilograms of onions from each square meter of the garden.

We are convinced that with our way of growing feeding both root and foliar are not needed, we do not even do them, because we believe: feeding is doping, unnatural violence to achieve temporary success. Our position is that you just need to grow this or that crop, collecting a real crop, and not surprise. We also consider oven ash to be an important key to success, we put it under the bows, and under carrots, salad, beans, cucumbers we do not use, because these vegetables react negatively to it and, therefore, will not give an increase in yield.

Preparing the soil in the fall for future spring plantings, we strive to take into account and meet the needs of plants in a particular nutrient, create a neutral soil reaction (pH 7). We use sideratesto compensate for the lack of organic fertilizer. It should be remembered that different types of green manure provide different amounts of certain nutrients. For example, potash siderates are good for onions, which can be potato tops (potassium content over 20%), sunflower stalks (potassium up to 30%).

For soil deoxidation we use baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) in the required amount, we give it in order to provide onions and beets with the sodium they need. We do all this instead of the notorious method recommended in a number of publications, where the authors write about the introduction of table salt (sodium chloride) into the soil, which is harmful to the soil. Edible salt will not add to the harvest, and we know from practice that drinking soda has a positive effect on beets and onions.

In the fight against pests, including onion flies, birds help, and for this you need to weld them to your plots. As for onion diseases, they are not terrible if the soil is properly prepared. And then you will not need various chemicals.

The use of the method of growing "family" onions, tried and tested over many years, allows to obtain a guaranteed yield of bulbs, which are enough for culinary purposes, for spring planting, and there are also reserves for forcing vitamin green feathers in winter. I want to tell the readers of the magazine about my methods of growing green onions without land.

The first way to grow green onions

We take an ordinary clean and dry polyethylene bag approximately 20 by 30 cm in size. Then we prepare the bulbs from the crop grown on our site (I assume that purchased onions are also suitable for this purpose) for the so-called "planting". To do this, cut the neck of the onion to the shoulder, free it from excess husk, then put these onions on a warm battery, keep it there for two hours. It should be borne in mind that you need so many bulbs so that they are located at the bottom of the bag in one or two rows. Then we tie the very top of the plastic bag with a string and leave a loop so that you can hang it on the window - on a carnation or on the handle of a frame or window - one side of this bag will face the glass, and the other - into the room or kitchen (see photo).

If you do everything as it is written, then in 30-45 days you will have a full bag of green onions, and the onion itself remains usable.

How does onion grow in a bag? An experimental device, a psychrometer, found that it turned out to have a higher humidity than in a residential apartment. It is created by different temperatures of the walls of the bag from the side of the window and from the side of the room, as a result of which condensation appears in the bag - moisture, which is enough for the growth of green onions.

The second way to get green onions is on water

Unlike the first method, which I invented myself, the second was borrowed in Moscow at VDNKh around the 1960s. It's called hydroponic cultivation. To do this, we take various boxes, jars (see photo), and of such a size that they fit and do not fall from the heated towel rail in the bathroom. For example, I take juice packs with a cork, in the upper part of them I make holes of such a size that the bottoms of the onions fit in them. When all the holes are occupied by the heads of the onions, the bottoms down, pour boiled cold water into the package up to the top and put it on the battery. After about 20-30 days, the green onions will appear, ready to use.

And there are many options. Here is one of them: now on sale there is fertilizer for seedlings OMU-growth, produced by the Buisk chemical plant. One teaspoon of this fertilizer is enough for a container of up to 1 liter, the solution changes after two to three weeks. But the onion in this solution is not suitable for food.

By the way, there was a time when I was growing in hydroponics, however, using more sophisticated technology, tomatoes, cucumbers and their seedlings. And I advise readers to use any of the above methods at home in order to provide family with fragrant vitamin onion feathers until spring. Good luck to all!

A few words about varieties

Most often, ordinary onions are used for forcing. But other species also give a good harvest of greens:

  • shallot,
  • leek,
  • batun,
  • shnitt.

Their advantage is that if the bulb on onions is depleted after 2 months, then, for example, a batun onion, with proper care, can grow in a pot for several years.

Any varieties are suitable for growing crops in winter, but it is advisable to give preference to multi-buds, where one bulb contains several nests, which gives much more greenery. The best varieties:

  • Bessonovsky,
  • Chernihiv,
  • Spassky,
  • Rostov,
  • Timiryazevsky,
  • Union.

Winter forcing of onions is not only an exciting process that all family members can do, but also a great opportunity to always have fresh and vitamin-packed greens on the table.

The nuances of growing green onions without land

Growing green onions at home is not difficult, but it has its own subtleties and characteristics. If everything is organized correctly, then you can get juicy shoots in two weeks.

The rapid growth of green onions is facilitated by a properly selected seed for growing. Varieties with one point of growth are not suitable - they will not get a lot of feathers. It is better to choose special varieties designed for greens. Gardeners prefer to grow varieties:

  • Bessonovsky
  • Arzamas
  • Pozharsky
  • Rostov
  • Spassky
  • Chernihiv 4.

These species are multi-primitive, known for their pungent taste and ease of growing. The photo shows a standard onion for greens.

The planting material is sorted out, sorted, spoiled, sprouted, rotten are removed. Sevok of the middle fraction, the diameter of which does not exceed 4 cm, and weighing up to 50 g, is left for growing.

Harvesting greens can be done under favorable growing conditions. Onions are cold-resistant crops, so elevated temperatures are not needed for them. The feather is grown at + 18–20 ° С. When the temperature rises above 25 ° C, the greens stop growing.

Containers and bags with plantings are not exposed to direct sunlight or near heating appliances. Experienced gardeners are advised to regularly spray green onions, then the feather will be juicy. The procedure is done so that moisture does not get on the head.

Growing green onions in a bag requires bright lighting. In autumn and winter, a backlight lamp is indispensable. The lamp is installed at a distance of 25-30 cm from the heads. The backlight is organized only from above, otherwise the pen will wrinkle.

How to grow green onions at home

Green onions are extremely grateful greens for growing at home. He does not impose excessive demands on either the soil or the temperature level. Good lighting and moderate heat are enough for him. That is why green onions are successfully grown all year round on window sills and balconies of apartments, even in the center of huge cities.

To find out how to grow green onions in an apartment, you need to remember what this plant is.

Forcing green onions at home

All bulbous plants, which include common onions, form a special underground organ - the bulb. It serves to accumulate a supply of nutrients and for reproduction (so-called babies are formed in most bulbs). In onions, the bulb is edible and has been actively used for food by mankind since time immemorial, when people still lived in caves and fed on gathering. But onion is not only edible "turnip" - its greens, called feathers, are also great for eating, has an excellent taste and a pungent appetizing aroma.

Onions are a storehouse of vitamins and special volatile substances - phytoncides. It was they who became the reason for the saying "bow from seven ailments." Phytoncides kill germs and viruses, reducing the risk of disease. Therefore, the use of onions, including green ones, is the prevention of many colds and viral diseases in the cold season. For decades, onion greens have been grown by our grandmothers and mothers in the simplest way - old onions were placed on glass mayonnaise jars of water.

Growing green onions at home in winter is actually forcing, the same one used for the early flowering of numerous bulbous plants - hyacinths, daffodils, tulips. The only difference is that no special conditions need to be created for the bow. There are several ways to grow green onions at home.

Growing a feather from an old bulb

This is an old proven method that gives 100% results and is very cost-effective. It often happens that a turnip bought for future use begins to deteriorate in the warmth of an apartment, becomes soft and germinates. It is no longer suitable for food, but it can become an excellent "supplier" of healthy greens.

How to grow green onions from an onion to get as much fresh feathers as possible? There are two ways - as in the days of our grandmothers, put the onion on a container of water or plant it in the ground. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Growing green onions "hydroponically"

This is a very simple and the cheapest way. Used "junk" onions, which are not suitable for food, that is, in fact, green onions are obtained for free. If not for distillation, the sprouted bulbs would definitely go to the trash can. Water is also not purchased on purpose, and any container for planting can be used.

A feature of the method is also the fact that such a receipt of green onions can become a decorative element of your kitchen. If you choose various colored or transparent bottles as containers for water, then the composition of the bulbs "sitting" on them with a bright bunch of fresh green feathers will look very modern and attractive.

For planting the bulbs on the water, you can also use special containers for water distillation of flowering bulbous plants. They are small glass "cones" of various shapes with a narrow neck, expanding upward and forming a special container for the bulb.

The key to growing green onions is in the form of these forcing tools. If you are interested in how to grow green onions at home from a bulb without losing planting material, remember that the bottom of the "turnip" should not be submerged in water. If this is allowed, the old onion will rot very quickly and die. If the water just touches the bottom, the onion will give good healthy roots that will sink into the water and nourish the greens. The bulb itself will remain dry and give a maximum of feathers.

To avoid the blooming of water in a very warm room, you can add 1 - 2 crystals of potassium permanganate to it. The liquid can be colored pale pink. Potassium permanganate does not harm the quality of the feather, on the contrary, feeding with manganese contributes to the formation of healthier and healthier greens.

To extend the life of one bulb, it is better not to cut the feather, but break off one at a time as it ripens.

Green onions from bulbs in soil

Old sprouted bulbs can also be planted in the ground, but this method is more costly, since it will require the acquisition of special land for seedlings, drainage and planting containers.

It is most rational to plant onions in a bridge way, that is, close to each other. This will hold many bulbs in a small, flat container. They do not need to be completely immersed in the ground, maximum by a third. Successful cultivation will require good drainage so that water does not stagnate. Caring for such plantings is exactly the same as for bulbs on the water. The advantage of this method is space saving. If you have a small window sill, it is more profitable to put a tray with a dozen bulbs on it than five separate vessels.

Growing a feather from onion sets

How to grow green onions on the balcony? Very simple. You will need onion sets. These are small bulbs obtained from seeds last year. They are planted in the spring in the ground for growing a full-fledged turnip. At home, you can get a lot of high quality green onions from the set.

For planting, high-quality material without signs of disease is selected. Bulbs should be medium in size, even, smooth and shiny. It is best if they are covered with a uniform and sufficiently dense husk - such a set will last longer than "naked". In addition, high-quality seedlings are the least susceptible to disease and produce a lot of greenery. Check that there are no black spots on the onion, and that there are no traces of mold in the form of bluish or gray lumps on the roots and base. Such bulbs are chosen and immediately thrown away, as otherwise they will infect the entire "colony" and your green onion plantation will perish without having time to give a crop. A soft bow is also thrown away, when pressed on which its surface noticeably bends under the finger. Most likely, this onion has already begun to rot inside.

Pickling and warming up the set

This procedure is carried out in the same way and with the same purpose as when planting seedlings in open ground. The high temperature awakens the growth point, and all the onions begin to actively sprout and develop together. Etching kills possible pathogens, as well as existing pest egg clutches.

Onions are usually heated in water with a temperature of no higher than 50 degrees. You can combine heat treatment with etching and stimulation by adding potassium permanganate, aloe juice or succinic acid to the water. The most common and effective method of fighting diseases and pests is a dark purple solution of potassium permanganate.

Onions for growing in the house are not treated with chemicals.

Preparation of soil and containers

To disinfect the soil and containers in which green onions will grow, they must be carefully prepared and processed.

Plastic trays are thoroughly rinsed with hot water if new. Used containers can be cleaned with baking soda or chlorine disinfectant. After such treatment, it must be rinsed under running water and filled with cool water overnight. This is to ensure that the remaining detergent dissolves and rinses out completely.

Wooden containers are cleaned of old soil, washed and scalded with boiling water.

Soil cultivation is equally important. It can contain eggs and larvae of pests, various pathogens and fungal spores. Most often, the following methods of soil disinfection are used:

· Treatment with a disinfectant solution.

For steaming, you need a container with a good drain and boiling water. The earth is watered with water that has just boiled, trying to evenly process the entire volume. Excess water is allowed to drain freely, and the soil is thoroughly dried. With this exposure, most spores and viruses, as well as pests with a soft shell, die. Those with a hard shell or shell of eggs may not be harmed.

Heating is most often done in the oven. The earth is scattered in a thin layer on a baking sheet and placed in a well-heated oven for 20 - 30 minutes. With this treatment, 99% of pests and sources of diseases die.

Treatment with a disinfectant solution is extremely simple and consists in abundant watering with a bright crimson solution of potassium permanganate, followed by drying the soil. It is important to ensure good water drainage. With this treatment, fungal diseases are well destroyed.

Planting seeding in the ground

If the soil and containers are prepared, and the sevok is processed, you can start planting. Sows are planted in the same way as large old bulbs. This is a bridge method in which the bulbs are planted in rows as close to each other as possible. To save space, especially if you do not know how to grow green onions at home on a small windowsill, the bulbs are slightly offset from each other. So they will fit much more in a relatively small area.

The planted set is carefully watered and placed in a bright and warm place. Until the onion sprouts, it does not need a lot of light, high temperature is much more important for rapid germination. It must be at least 22 - 25˚С. When growth begins, the bulb trays can be moved to a windowsill or balcony. You need to choose the most illuminated area - in the dark, the greens will stretch out, will be pale and stunted.

The easiest way to grow green onions is on closed balconies and loggias. There is enough warmth and a lot of light. Multiple trays can be accommodated by custom-sized wall shelves. A wide window sill or a table attached to it will also help with placement.

The balcony and the kitchen with the grown onions must be periodically ventilated, choosing the warmest non-frosty days for this. If the plants are on the windowsill, they are removed away from the open window during airing.

Planting care

Since the onion gives up production in a fairly short period of time, it simply does not have time to completely deplete the soil. No feeding is needed for home greens, as they may contain too many toxic chemicals due to the use of fertilizers.

All care consists in regular moderate moisture and timely cleaning of the green feather. When it becomes clear that the strength of the bulb is exhausted and there will be no more harvest, the old "spent" seedlings are thrown away, the land is either re-prepared or replaced with fresh ones. The growing process can be started over.

Mixed landings

Onions grow well "in the company" of other greens. If you have free space or don't need a lot of green onions, but have an interest in getting a variety of greens, you can do mixed plantings.

To do this, seeds of the desired spicy herbs are sown in one container - dill, parsley, watercress, cilantro and many others. The choice of herbs depends only on the preferences of the owner. You can plant a basil bush or some celery plants. Since many plants germinate for a very long time, for example, dill and parsley can "sit" in the ground for up to 40 days or even more, the seeds are germinated before sowing. Sevok can be planted after areas with parsley or dill are outlined. This way you can get a good harvest of greenery almost at the same time.

Such a micro-garden on a windowsill or balcony will require a little more attention, but the return will increase several times. Almost the entire cold winter, you can delight your loved ones with delicious soups, main courses and salads, abundantly sprinkled with fragrant fresh herbs, which are also grown by your own hands.

Knowing how to grow green onions at home, even in winter, you can serve fragrant greens to the table. I use a special cylinder for forcing green onions, which takes up little space, but gives a large harvest, which is especially important in a small apartment. My cylinder is easy to move from place to place, looks very decorative on the windowsill and has served me for many years.

Everyone can make such a bed at home on a windowsill. The main part is a tall plastic cylinder (or narrow bucket, wastepaper basket). The height can be arbitrary. I installed the cylinder on a deep tray where water collects.

To plant the bulbs, I drilled holes with a diameter of about 1.5 centimeters. The distance between the staggered holes is 5 centimeters.

You can drive out onions immediately after the season in the garden is over. Problems can only arise with spicy varieties of onions. After harvesting, they begin a period of deep dormancy, and they will grow back slowly.

For distillation, choose large bulbs that have already begun to germinate.

To speed up the process, trim 1 to 2 cm off the top of the head (trim to the shoulders). This technique brings the bulb out of its dormancy state and allows air to penetrate inside.

Sprinkle the cut area with ash or powdered activated carbon. This will dry out the wound and prevent the plant from getting sick. If mold appears on the cut, do not rush to discard the onion. The mold will gradually disappear. These are just fungi that feed on the juice that has flowed out of the wound; they will not pass further into the bulb.

Before forcing, fill the container with damp earth or sawdust (layer thickness - 5-8 cm), place the bulbs close to each other and lightly press them into the substrate.

Growing temperature does not have much effect on the yield, but the warmer it is, the faster the feathers will grow back. The best option is + 20 ... + 22 degrees.

The lighting is quite natural, but if you grow onions far from the window or in several tiers, then you will have to supplement the lighting. A 20-30 watt light bulb is enough.

You rarely need to water the onion, otherwise midges will fly, but the substrate must be wet. The duration of forcing is an average of 30-40 days. The wounds on the cut leaves gradually heal, and the leaf still grows 20-30 cm.

To get a harvest longer, feed the onion 1-2 times with a solution of calcium nitrate at the rate of 0.5 tsp. for 2 liters of water. Nitrogen will give powerful greens, and calcium will strengthen the walls of the leaves and will not allow them to lie down, even at high altitudes.

After distilling the bulbs, it is enough to loosen the substrate or soil, fill it with a fresh layer (2-3 cm) on top and carry out a new planting.

Green onions: how to grow in winter and how to eat

Onions play an important role in human nutrition, not only for their taste, but also for their medicinal properties. Fresh onions are also very healthy. Eating it in food has a beneficial effect on immunity and digestion.

Onion leaves contain a large amount of vitamin C and vitamin A, phytoncides and biologically active substances that kill pathogenic bacteria in the body and increase its resistance to infections.

In winter and early spring, we eat very little green onions, although it is not difficult to grow them.

Forcing green feathers from bulbs is possible both in winter greenhouses and in an apartment in boxes, and even in containers with clean water. To make the onions come out of dormancy faster and begin to grow, it is recommended to cut the tops of the bulbs to the very shoulders. The onion is not planted deeply. Before planting, it is soaked in warm water.

For growing greenery, multi-primordial varieties are taken: Arzamassky, Bessonovsky, Rostovsky. The larger the planting material, the faster the feather will be. Onions grow well at temperatures of 16-20 ° C during the day and 14-16 ° C at night. Higher air temperatures in winter, when there is little light, leads to a deterioration in the quality of plants. To obtain green, rather than pale green leaves, the planting containers are kept as close to the window as possible. Watering is done in moderation so that the onion does not rot. Onions for greens in winter cannot be fed with nitrogen fertilizers, otherwise the products will contain nitrates.

Within two to three weeks, you can get a full harvest of green onions after planting them in containers.
