How to quickly build a small body of water in the garden
Does a water one live with you?
I walk between the beds, enjoy - finally greenery, finally warm. Everything is sown and planted, fertilized, and at heart is calm. Then the little son comes up: "Mom, are there any devil, mermaids and mermaids?" He asks with the hope of an affirmative answer, because you really want to believe in miracles when you are four years old.
I look around and understand that in our gardening, like in many others, there is nothing mysterious - only houses and beds. Where can mysterious heroes of children's fantasies settle here? And I don’t want to disappoint the child so much ... While I was thinking about what to answer, Danya himself had already found a way out: “Let's plant a forest here, then the goblin will live with us.” The forest is, of course, good, but when every spring the question arises of where else to cram a few beets and a little peas, the idea of a forest on a site sounds even more fantastic than the very existence of goblin. After a joint discussion, we decided that mermaids and aquatic creatures are more compact creatures, and we will settle them on our site: after all, a small reservoir will take up less space than the smallest forest.
We chose a shady spot between the apple and cherry trees — the most mysterious in the garden — and set to work. In general, it is not recommended to place a reservoir under the trees, because leaves, faded flowers will fall into the water and clog it. Well, we will have to collect debris from the surface of the water more often. But our future reservoir will not overheat on a hot summer afternoon, and the fish (our underwater king needs subjects!) Will feel comfortable.
With the size of the reservoir, everything was clear, it was determined by a free piece of land, they decided to make the most simple shape - rounded, slightly elongated. We marked a contour on the ground, dug a hole. One bank was made lower so that in spring or during long rains, excess water would pour out of the reservoir and it would not turn into a swamp.
The two coped in an hour, and it is difficult to say who helped whom - the son tried his best, chose the largest shovel in the barn, because he embodied his own idea. The depth of the reservoir turned out to be about 70 cm. "There are such small aquatic ones, - said Danya, - such people will like it here." Yes, and a pond of such depth is suitable for fish.
After the foundation pit for the future reservoir has been dug, you need to tamp its bottom. This process caused Dani a lot of positive emotions - he had to stamp his feet, moreover, as hard as possible. Then we poured a thin layer of sand on the bottom (you can use peat instead of sand), about 5 cm, so that the film that we put in the reservoir is less deformed by tree roots and small pebbles. We slightly moistened the sand and tamped it down again. When there was no more strength to stomp, they began to lay the film on the bottom.
We took a special film for the construction of reservoirs, it's not scary to leave it for the winter - it won't crack from frost and will last a long time, because it's a pity if all our beauty will please us only one or two seasons. So that the film does not suffer from ice pressure in winter, wooden balls or empty plastic bottles are usually thrown into the reservoir, which relieve pressure from the banks, protecting the film.
Straightening the folds of the film from the center to the banks, Danya rolled around and crawled into the pit as much as he could. The edges of the film must be cut off after the pond is filled with water. Therefore, we took a hose, filled the hole - first by 1/3, and two hours later - to the brim. This is done so that the air from under the film can escape during these two hours, and the soil settles under the weight of the water. After that, Danya himself cut off the excess film with scissors, leaving 30 cm to mask the edges.
We decided to close the film with stones around the perimeter of the reservoir, and plant moisture-loving plants behind the stones. From what grew on the site, we chose a swimsuit, daylily, hosta and astilba. Then we walked around the neighborhood, dug a yellow marsh iris in a nearby ditch, and brought a fern from the forest. According to the rules, it was necessary to draw up the banks of the newly made reservoir in 1-2 days, but we had to hurry up - until the excitement disappeared, and I want to say that nothing bad happened due to the fact that the plants were planted right away, but, on the contrary, With a sense of accomplishment in front of all the watermen in the world, Danya and I went to bed.
We have a lot of things planned for tomorrow: we need to plant reeds, a water lily and a calla in our pond, call frogs and dragonflies for housewarming, and most importantly, find out what little aquatic ones like most, how to make friends with them and what to treat.

A place under the sun
If the site has a pronounced relief, then the garden pond is placed in its lower part. And the place is chosen, avoiding the sun itself. Good illumination of the reservoir has a beneficial effect on the development of aquatic flora and fauna, coastal vegetation. But constant heating of water in summer will provoke active reproduction of algae, as they say, “bloom” of the pond. A light shade is quite appropriate, however, from the reservoir, arranged under the crowns of trees, you will be fishing for leaves all autumn.
The key to successful landscape design is the correct planning of the site.
Therefore, before proceeding with the design, you need to depict the area on paper and plan the location:
- Garden beds
- Flower bed
- Garden paths
- Buildings, etc.
An example of planning a garden plot
To make planning easier, the site must be divided into several zones:
Next, we will consider the main points of their design.
Plot near the house
As a rule, the design of the site begins with the local area, namely, the front garden in front of the house.
I must say right away that it is not worth planting tall plants here, as the owners of the plots sometimes do.
- The best option is to place a flower garden there. Low-growing garden shrubs and flowers will look harmonious and serve as a decoration for the facade.
- In the courtyard of the house, you can make a canopy and install a table under it. Such a solution will be beneficial from a practical point of view, as it will allow the family to dine in the fresh air.
- It is advisable to protect the yard from other territory, for example, with a hedge or a wicker fence, if it fits into the style of the exterior.
The garden is usually located behind the house so that the plants are away from the road.
Trees can be planted with fruit or exclusively decorative (if the garden is planned to be used only as a resting place).
- Regardless of the type of garden, it should be diversified with shrubs and flowers planted in the spaces between the trees. This will make it more diverse and attractive.
- As a rule, there is also a recreation area in the garden. It is best for these purposes to highlight among the trees a lawn for a gazebo, a decorative pond, a barbecue and other elements for a comfortable stay. Additionally, you can decorate the lawn with flowers and ornamental shrubs.
- It is advisable to plant a shrub along the perimeter of the site, which will hide it from prying eyes, and at the same time decorate with a hedge.
When decorating a garden, you need not to overdo it with bushes and trees, so as not to turn it into solid thickets.
In addition, it will negatively affect the development of plants.
Often, the owners of the plots completely do not pay attention to the design of the garden, limiting themselves only to decorating the garden, as a result, this zone is "knocked out" of the overall landscape design. This approach is a big mistake.
In the photo - an example of decorating a vegetable garden
The fact is that with proper planning, a vegetable garden can also serve as an excellent decoration for a site. To do this, first of all, you need to think over the location of the beds and plants that will grow on them. Some vegetables are not inferior to flowers in beauty of shape and color.
I must say that decorative paths are also an important point in the design of the garden. They serve not only to decorate it, but also to facilitate access to plants. In addition, you should consider fences for the beds, which should be combined with paths.
What size should the body of water be?
Reservoir area... The larger the water mirror, the more spectacular the reservoir. Natural reservoirs can be of different sizes.
In a Japanese garden, for a harmonious perception, the water mirror should be at least 1/5 of the entire area with decoration, coastline.
There is only one limitation for stagnant water bodies. In order for it to be decorative throughout the season, and the quality of the water in it to remain good, the minimum area should be at least 3 m 2, it makes no sense to arrange a smaller one, since with a smaller area the water will not be purified naturally.
The shape of the reservoir... Best of all, more natural, it will look like a simple pond with an oval or slightly curved shape, narrowed or widened on one side. If there are more than two bends, then this reservoir will look unnatural.
The depth of the reservoir... The depth of the reservoir does not play a big role for its showiness. Nevertheless, so that it does not dry out, be clean, and the plants feel comfortable, a depth of up to 50 centimeters is quite enough.
If you want to launch fish into it, then it must have a depth of at least 80 centimeters. To facilitate your work in the garden, you can make the reservoir non-freezing, then its depth should be at least 1.2 meters.
Artificial pond - the center of your garden
Spring and summer are ideal seasons to consider building an artificial pond in your garden. Whether it's a waterfall, stream or fountain, it will be a stunning centerpiece of the garden area that provides the perfect place for privacy and relaxation. The artificial reservoir helps attract a variety of wildlife: dragonflies, frogs and many species of birds, not to mention the envious neighbors.
The first step in creating a pond is to choose the right place, it is best to be as close to home as possible, this has significant advantages: you can admire a beautiful view from the window and conduct electricity nearby for lighting and equipment operation, if it becomes necessary to install it (pumps, filters etc.). Position the pond so that rainwater cannot enter it. Do not build a pond too close to trees, as falling leaves and other organic debris must be removed regularly. Try to build a pond where it will receive at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sun for normal growth of aquatic plants. In the Yaskrava store you can buy wholesale everything for the garden and vegetable garden.
Choose your site carefully, use the pond as the centerpiece of the landscape in your yard or garden. The pond should look like a natural decoration for the garden, so that it is in complete harmony with the landscape and buildings.
Consider what type of aquatic life you want to see in the pond. Could your body of water be home to goldfish or carp? Or is your main concern aquatic plants? Maybe you only want to hear the sound of a waterfall. Each type of body of water must be planned and carefully thought out. Keep in mind that the most common mistakes gardeners make is making their first pond too small. Small size limits the number of living creatures, the smaller the volume of water, the more difficult it is to maintain biological balance. Fish should not be more than the permissible amount: about 1 kg of live weight per 1000 liters or 50 liters of water per 1 cm of body length.
Construction of a reservoir
It is necessary to determine the size and depth of the future pond or water garden. The best way to do this is to spread a rope or garden hose in the shape of a future body of water on the ground - this will be the boundaries of the excavation. In colder areas, it is necessary to deepen to a greater depth in order to keep the pond from freezing in winter. The depth of the deep-water zone should be at least 100 cm, preferably 120-200 cm. A large pond is more stable and easier to maintain. Keep in mind that the finished pond or water garden will be about 30% smaller than you imagined and planned.
Start digging, starting at the edges, after you have dug the outline of the pond, you can move in and out to form a bowl. The walls of the pit should not be made vertical, the maximum slope is 30 - 45 degrees. Remember that the soil inside the reservoir and sanding will take away a few centimeters of its depth. The finished recess is carefully compacted and covered with sand in a layer of 5 - 10 cm and covered with geotextile. Geotextile is a non-woven material that serves to protect against roots and stony inclusions that can damage the film, and also distributes the load over the entire area of the reservoir. It fits with an overlap of 10 - 15 centimeters. A special film is laid on top of the geotextile, designed to create artificial lakes and reservoirs, which is resistant to environmental influences (ultraviolet, frost). It is not recommended to use garden plastic wrap, as it usually lasts no more than three years in our winter conditions. For small reservoirs with a mirror up to 5-15 m2 and a depth of up to 1 m, a film with a thickness of 0.5 mm can be used. For larger and deeper lakes, a pond film with a thickness of at least 1 mm is required. Trim off any excess film and press the edges with the stones that hold it in place. You can fill the pond with water. Under the pressure of water, the film takes the shape of a pit, and the folds formed during the installation process become invisible.
There are many ways to secure the edge of the film and shape the appearance of the pond, and it is more a matter of your taste. You can dig a groove around the perimeter of the pond about 30 centimeters wide and deep. We put the edge of the film into the resulting shelf and fix it with a stone at the same level as the ground surface. The next stage is the decoration and planting of plants.
Circulation of water is not a prerequisite, but use will create a more comfortable environment for animals and will have a beneficial effect on aquatic plants. Fountains or waterfalls not only saturate the water with oxygen, but are also a wonderful decoration for a home lake.

A pond is a decoration of almost any garden, and even in a small garden it can look organic
The size of the pond and its configuration depend only on your capabilities and wishes. The pond can fit into any type of site.
For gardens created in a regular style, you need the same reservoir, which means that it must be geometric shape... A lawn or paving will be an excellent background for it.
More picturesque natural ponds with jagged edgestheir shores are much simpler decorate with various plants.
Dug in barrels will allow you to create perfectly round, albeit small in size, reservoirs. Since their depth is sufficient, it is quite possible to grow water lilies in them.
Ready-made plastic molds are common, easy to install, and just as easy to move to different parts of your garden.
To create a real pond is an extremely difficult task, this is the aerobatics of landscape art.
DIY stone fountain
How to build stone fountain? We will talk about this right now. First you need to take care of the availability of all the necessary devices and materials. We will need:
- Water pump (medium power subsea will do)
- Plastic container under the bowl
- Metal or PVC tube for conducting electrical cable
- Flat stones and gravel
- Bars made of wood
- Water flow regulator
- Copper tube with a diameter of 15 mm.
Pit for the bowl of the fountain, there should be a little more capacity prepared for these purposes. Having covered the space between it and the walls of the pit with soil, we will significantly strengthen the position of the bowl. As in the previous cases, do not forget to create at the bottom of the pit sand pillow... On top, you need to lay out a layer of pebbles.
Water pump is located in the water tank freely. This will facilitate the work of repairing it, if the need arises. The water tank can be protected from debris by simply fine mesh... To give strength to the structure, on top of the metal mesh, wooden blocks (if desired, they can be replaced with metal fittings).
The base of the fountain will be metal pipewhich is mounted vertically to the pump.
The next stage is preparation flat stones. To do this, using special tools, we make holes with a diameter slightly larger than the diameter of the metal pipe - the base of the structure.
Further, according to the principle of a child's pyramid, we "put" stones on the pipe. It remains only to add decorative elements to the fountain and connect the pump. A very simple, but effective and beautiful do-it-yourself fountain in the country is ready for use.
