Since the main areas where corn is grown on an industrial scale are in the south of the country, many Russians are of the opinion that this herbaceous crop grows well only in warm climates. However, a temperate climate is also quite suitable for its cultivation, as long as the soil is slightly acidic and well fertilized. The land for planting corn needs to be prepared in the fall, especially if you are interested in growing early corn. Choose a place on the site that is well protected from cold winds, dig up the soil and immediately apply phosphorus and organic fertilizers to it.

For soil with high acidity, lime will also be required. You can grow corn in the country next to cucumbers, tomatoes, pumpkins, beans and beans. The most successful will be the neighborhood with a pumpkin, the extensive leaves of which protect the corn roots from weeds and overheating, as well as with beans, which saturate the soil with nitrogen, and corn will serve well for beans as a convenient support for weaving. It is not recommended to just plant corn next to celery or beetroot.

For soil with high acidity, lime will also be required.

How to grow corn step by step

It is possible to plant corn seeds in the ground only when the danger of frost has passed. So, in the southern regions, planting in mid-May is allowed, for the northern regions, the period from late May to early June is more suitable. If the soil is too wet or not warmed up enough, seed germination will be significantly reduced.

To increase the resistance of corn to low temperatures and to extend the period of its growth (so that the cobs have time to fully ripen), it is better to pre-plant the seeds in peat pots at the beginning of May. Then, by the twentieth of May, young sprouts will already have two or three leaves, and the finished seedlings can be safely planted in the garden.

Basic rules for growing corn in the country:

  • corn should be planted in rows (for better pollination), with row spacing of 60 cm;
  • place plants in a row at a distance of 15 cm;
  • the seeds are buried in the soil by about seven centimeters;
  • when the seedlings have four leaves, the plants are thinned out;
  • the aisles should be weeded and loosened regularly;
  • corn from time to time is fed with mullein and spud;
  • while the roots develop inward, frequent watering is not required, and after the formation of panicles, you need to water the plants as the earth dries up;
  • It is recommended to remove the lateral shoots from corn in order to obtain large cobs.

You can determine that it is time to pick the cobs by the color of the corn stigmas

Subject to these rules, growing corn in the country gives excellent results. Early varieties can be harvested from mid-August, and later varieties will ripen by the end of August. You can tell if the cobs are about to be picked by the color of the corn stigmas - in ripe corn they turn brown and dry out.

Sweet corn is an annual crop belonging to the category of cereals. In height, its stems can reach 3-5 m, cobs are formed on female inflorescences located along the stem. Men form empty "panicles". The root system of the plant is strong, and the so-called aerial roots often appear at the level of the lower nodes.

The leaves are large, lanceolate, sometimes up to 1 m in length. Sweet corn is grown in areas for the sake of the ears, presented in the form of a cone, densely covered with grains of rich yellow color. Rare varieties may even have purple or black hues, but such corn is not common in the middle lane.

The grains are served to the table as soon as they reach milky or milky-wax ripeness. Those. in the initial phase of its ripening, when the elements of the cob are still easily squeezed by the fingers, releasing juice from themselves. Of all cereals, only corn is harvested at this point: oats, wheat and similar crops require entry into a more mature stage. The product can be used in any of these phases both raw and thermally processed.

For the formation of the root system, good growth of the aboveground part of the plant and the development of the ears, the crop needs good soil fertilization. Fertilizer for corn must necessarily consist of:

  • phosphorus, which helps the grain to germinate
  • potassium in order to strengthen immunity to numerous diseases and contribute to the growth of green mass in the plant
  • nitrogen to support the growth of leaves and stems
  • calcium, which lowers the acidity of the soil and promotes the formation of root hairs in corn.

For the first time, fertilizers are applied before planting, with deep plowing. For 1 square meter of land you will need: 50-60 g of organic fertilizers, 200 g of potassium, 400 g of superphosphate.

By themselves, organic fertilizers in the form of manure help corn to develop actively, saturating it as much as possible with all the necessary elements. First of all, they promote the development of beneficial microorganisms to the soil, which facilitate the absorption of nutrients.

If the cultivation of corn in the country takes place in an excessively acidic soil, liming should be carried out. To do this, use 3 kg of lime per 10 square meters.
