Fertilize the lawn properly

Fertilize the lawn properly

A really dense parade lawn without moss requires large amounts of plant nutrients to be able to grow green and be nice all season, year after year. Think for yourself - what other plant would be able to be constantly cut down and still continue to grow with full force.

Fertilizer in lawn = more care

Easy care and parade lawn are not available. A beautiful green and dense lawn requires its care and attention. If you care less about what the lawn looks like and want it easy to maintain, you can skip manure. Manure for lawns contains a lot of nitrogen. Nitrogen promotes growth, which in turn requires mowing the lawn more often. That is why the recommendations look a little different based on what you are looking for. Sometimes the recommendation is to skip the lawn and instead choose a meadow or flower beds instead. Here is a guide for those who invest in a nice lawn.

Lawns grow more from nitrogen fertilizer, which means a healthier and more resistant lawn, but also that you have to mow often.

Fertilize the lawn as follows:

Use a special lawn fertilizer that is KRAV-labeled. It contains extra nitrogen, something that the lawn needs large amounts of. Always follow the dosing instructions on the package and do not overdose. Alternatively, you can use chicken manure.

2. You can use a spreading wagon when fertilizing if the lawn is large. Spreading the manure by hand with the right dosage and without it becoming uneven is not easily difficult if you do not have the habit inside.

3. Fertilize preferably in connection with rain. The nutrient grains then melt down quickly before they have time to burn the grass and give ugly, brown spots.

4. If there is a drought after you have fertilized, it is good if you can water down the manure instead. Set out a water spreader and let it stand for a few hours until all the nutrients have melted into the soil.

5. Repeat the fertilization at regular intervals. In general, for fertilization, it is better to fertilize a little and often than a lot and rarely. With a fast-acting fertilizer, this can mean 4-5 times during the spring and summer. This does not apply if it is long-acting fertilizers, which are preferable. Long-acting fertilizers gradually release the nutrients over a long period of time, which reduces the risk that the lawn will not have time to absorb the fertilizer so that the excess goes down into the groundwater. The important thing is to follow the instructions on the bag, and not to over-fertilize.

Give the last dose of lawn fertilizer in July. (If you want to give the lawn something extra even during the autumn, you should instead use a special autumn fertilizer.) This is so that the lawn will stop focusing on growth and mature in time to cope with the winter.

Do not over-fertilize the lawn. Follow the instructions and finish on time in the fall.

Different types of lawn fertilizer

Lawn manure - a special fertilizer for lawn that consists of exactly the nutrient composition that the lawn needs. Lawn manure is primarily rich in nitrogen, the nutrient the grass needs most of.

Combi preparation - a lawn fertilizer that also contains pesticides against weeds. Keep in mind that it must be warm in the soil for you to get a good effect from such a preparation. It is therefore a waste of money to distribute combi preparations before midsummer, and it can also be detrimental to the environment. Remember that it is a real pesticide - follow the safety instructions on the packaging!

Moss preparation - works in the same way as combi preparations, but contains pesticides against moss instead of weeds. The preparation kills the moss, which after a couple of weeks can easily be raked away from the lawn. At the same time, the grass is fertilized, which gives increased competitiveness for the grass against the moss in the future. Always follow the safety instructions!

Autumn manure - not really a specific lawn fertilizer, but can be used for the whole garden. Autumn fertilizer does not contain nitrogen, something you should avoid during the autumns when the grass needs to prepare for winter rest instead of investing in growth. This applies to most garden plants.

Top dressing - is a way to improve the soil structure while fertilizing. The term means that you rake out a thin layer of sandy and loamy soil that is heavily fertilized. Top dressing is carried out in April, as soon as the lawn has started to turn green. When you top dress, you do not need to use any extra lawn fertilizer.

Lime - used only to change the pH if the soil is acidic. Moss thrives in acidic soil and can be an indicator that you have acidic soil. Feel free to do a soil test (available for purchase in commercial gardens and garden centers) before so as not to whitewash unnecessarily.

Autumn care of the lawn month-by-month

Ash contains many useful nutrients that plants need, including potassium and calcium (lime). All plants need potassium especially woody plants such as peonies, roses and many other shrubs. Fruit trees, especially plums and cherries, need potassium as well as tomatoes and cabbage plants. However, one should be careful not to spread too much ash in the vegetable land as the ash may contain small residues of heavy metals. The lawn also feels good from a thin layer of ash as well as the compost. Since the ash is alkaline, on the other hand, it should not be used for plants that thrive in low-pH soil, so-called acid soil plants. These include rhododendrons, azaleas, blueberries and raspberries.

Examples of organic manure are cow manure and chicken manure that you can buy in a bag at the nursery, well manure for those who have access to such or compost soil for everyone who has compost in the garden. The quirky thing about natural fertilizers is that they have a long-lasting effect. The plants can absorb nutrients from the fertilized soil when they need it and in the amount required at each occasion. The nutrients that remain are bound in the soil until the plant feels that it is time to refill. Cow manure, manure and compost also have the great advantage that they improve the soil's structure and replenish the soil's top layer (topsoil). Then you have managed the fertilizer and the soil improvement at the same time! Therefore, organic fertilizer is perfect for shrub plantations, hedges, roses, flower beds, berry bushes and vegetable land, all of which need both nutrition and soil improvement this year.

Organic manure must not be spread when rain is expected, but do not place it directly on thin leaves, but mulch it all around. By mulching it down, the decomposition process starts faster and the plants get faster access to the nutrients. But nothing really digging - just a light thrashing.

A fantastic advantage of mulching is that you take the opportunity to get to know your soil. Feeling, squeezing and straining soil between your fingers a few times per season is a good way to gain an understanding of how the soil can change depending on the weather, what is grown and how much you yourself work with fertilization and soil improvement.

Good with compost soil

Improving the soil discount is quick, fairly simple and does not cost much. It is often believed that nutrition is needed, but in fact a better structure on earth is more important.

How do I go about?

- The best is a compost with compost soil. Lay or sprinkle a few inches of it on the existing soil. There is a living micro-life in the compost soil. Do not use artificial fertilizers. The micro-life in the earth cannot live on chemicals, says Bosse Rappne slightly ironically.

If you do not have access to compost soil, there are two other suggestions.

- For a clay soil, you buy bark soil that is a little gravelly to the consistency and apply. Add a couple of three inches to the existing soil. For a sandy soil, you buy cow manure and use instead.

GrönTrädgård Eco is a requirement-approved organic-based all-round fertilizer that has the same positive effect on the lawn as on other plants in the garden, as in the vegetable land. GrönTrädgård Eco has a long-term effect thanks to the organic base which means that the nutrients are secreted slowly and thus gives grass, plants and crops the right amount of NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) during their growth. The garden becomes wonderfully green and nice with simple care. Grasses and plants stay healthy and strong to withstand both wear and tear and winter. Unlike fertilizers, GrönTrädgård Eco contains valuable micronutrients (see product sheet).

Do this

The first fertilization should only take place when the outdoor temperature reaches 8-9 ° C and grass and plants have started to grow. Spread GrönTrädgård Eco in the place you want to fertilize. The best results are achieved by fertilizing at least three times during the growing season according to the fertilization schedule below.

Fertilize the lawn:

Spread out GrönTrädgård Eco, preferably with a spreader trolley. Water for best results. Within a week or so, the treatment with GrönTrädgård Eco will start to give clear results. Tip! If you have moss in the lawn, the manure Greenkeeping Grass Manure Moss is recommended.

Dosage: 3-5 kg per 100 m² (see fertilizer schedule below for the correct dosage). 10 kg is enough for about 250 m².

Manure schedule lawn

Fertilize other plants in the garden:

Spread GrönTrädgård Eco in the place you want to fertilize, when the plant is in good growth during the spring. Water for best results. Tip! When planting a flowerbed or re-planting trees and shrubs, fertilization is recommended in the spring, approx. 150-250 g / m². For a healthy plant, maintenance fertilization is recommended every year when the plant is in good growth.

Dosage: 60-100 g / m².

Fertilize the kitchen garden / vegetable land:

Spread Green Garden Eco at regular intervals. Water for best results. Tip! Keep in mind that different crops have different nutritional needs, GrönTrädgård Eco is thus excellent for some crops and less good for others. Cucumbers and onion plants are nutritious and feel good from extra nutrition. If you grow potatoes, on the other hand, it is important to remember that potatoes want a low nitrogen content and a high potassium content. Otherwise you risk a harvest that mostly consists of tops.

Dosage: 100-150 g / m².

GrönTrädgård Eco is delivered in a 10 kg sack.

How often you should fertilize depends on the condition of the lawn, time of season and how many lawn fertilizers are used during the same time. Fertilization should be done according to the dosing instructions on the package (different for different products).

If it does not rain when you fertilize, water the fertilizer so that it dissolves and gives the best effect.

Manure should be stored in a dry and cool place, as well as away from direct sunlight and strong heat.
