In the realm of black pines and coal
One day before autumn, Fabio and I decide for an excursion in search of naturalistic photographic shots. Our destination? The path that from Case Brun di Talucco (a few kilometers from Pinerolo) leads to Giuseppe Melano Refuge, that is the famous Canada House of the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics.
The trail is known to be immersed in a wood where woodpeckers have found their homes, in particular the great spotted woodpecker, the lesser spotted woodpecker and the green woodpecker, with its famous laugh-like sound accelerated.
The day is dedicated to rest, in fact the path can be covered in about an hour (one way) and the difference in height is minimal (about a hundred meters). In addition, the weather is not the best.
The entrance to the path
So we start from the Case Brun car park and enter the path, which is already starting to be really steep! We had read that the difference in height was about 100 meters, but we are burning them all in the first steps of the excursion!
After passing some sporadic houses, with a cock in the distance that proudly sings its songs, we arrive in a few minutes at the Ciardonet hill, at 1070 meters above sea level.
From there you can take various paths, as well as having a snack in the picnic area. Nearby are Monte Freidour (1451 m), Monte Tre Denti (1365 m) and one of the famous Piedmont climbing sites: Rocca Sbarua. The refuge to which we are headed is located exactly at the foot of the latter and it is neither difficult nor rare to see small dots on the wall trying to conquer the summit.
The fortress is also a reference site for the CAI mountaineering schools and, especially at the gates of autumn, we see many new climbers approaching the world of climbing. I too have been among those groups and on those walls, consequently, as soon as I see the fortress, I am nostalgically ecstatic.
The path of the charcoal burner and the pine forest
From the hill we take the downhill path. The itinerary is immersed in a forest of black and Scots pines, which prevent the sun's rays from illuminating the path…. Never mind, there is not even a shadow of the sun!
The path leading to the refuge is well signposted and is part of theitinerary for the "charcoal cellar", with exhibition signs full of captions and explanations about the profession of charcoal burners, who worked in the area until the early 1900s.
After passing a stream that bathes the dirt road we are traveling on and that comes from the Sperina hill, where there is the source of drinking water, we find a crossroads and take the marked path that goes into the woods and which is called "carbonaia" . Both paths lead to the refuge, but the one we decide to take (on the right) is more impressive. We immediately cross the stream thanks to a wooden bridge which, immersed in the woods, creates a magical atmosphere and we venture into nature.
From here the path becomes narrower, but is still often signposted with the classic white and red colors.
Every now and then we stop to listen to the sounds of nature, looking through the branches of trees, hoping to see some woodpeckers, but unfortunately we are not lucky. Instead we hear what sounds like the song of the green woodpecker, like a laugh in the distance.
Among climbers, caves and ancient legends
The path thins out two or three times, opening with a view towards some mountain groups of the Cuneo area. The distant horizon, however, is poorly defined due to the mist that envelops the landscape. On the contrary, looking north, you can see the first groups of climbers and hear their shouting.
Just before the last stretch to reach the refuge, there is a cave which remains on the right and was used by charcoal burners for bivouacs. It is a very interesting site. An anecdote is told on the display panel: a charcoal burner who one night supervised three bonfires to produce coal, left his son in the cave to go and check the level of the fire. But the little one says that he did not sleep a wink, due to an owl that terrified him with its cry. It is impressive to discover how much the world has changed and the professions known in our youth by our grandparents.
We see Casa Canada a few minutes later. There is also a heliport nearby.
We rest with our eyes on the climbers. I observe the grace of climbing. It is an exciting sport, which knows how to give strong emotions. Being on a stop tens of meters high is a unique sensation. Climbing slowly, thinking about every step you have to take to advance, looking for the best holds, the protrusions in the rock, is really something that cannot be explained in words.
After a stop of about fifteen minutes, we leave for the car. With a quick but not too fast pace, we can get back to the parking lot in just 45 minutes. Obviously there are also those who take a little longer, like the little explorer in the photo. But what matters is the commitment and above all ... don't give up!
We enjoyed the day a lot despite the peaks being shy and holed up in the depths of the woods. Maybe next time!
