Red cabbage varieties: overview of options for all regions

Red cabbage varieties: overview of options for all regions

Anyone who thinks that red cabbage is dry and fibrous is not entirely right. Many varieties have been created with juicy and tasty heads of cabbage: early - for salads, late - for storage and pickling, medium - for universal use. Gardeners even have favorites, about which they talk exclusively in a positive and even enthusiastic way.

Early varieties of red cabbage

The purpose of early varieties is salad. The heads of cabbage grow small, the leaves inside are juicy and tasty without any sourdough or heat treatment. The ripening period of such cabbage is 95–110 days from the emergence of shoots.

Faberge

Among the early gardeners among the favorites of Faberge. It is most often praised for its taste and trouble-free growing.

I looked into my seed file and found that this was the season I was growing. I confess: I have nothing to compare with, since I just started to get acquainted with red cabbage and Faberge - my debut. It grows in a very large bush, spreads the leaves on the sides with huge and smooth burdocks. In the center of the outlet there is a small but very dense head of cabbage weighing about 2 kg. Its shape is elongated-oval, one might say, ovoid with a wide end up. I kept this cabbage in the garden almost until October, it rained, the forks did not crack. The stump is short inside. I prepared salads from Faberge, fermented it, stewed it with meat, added it to cabbage soup and borscht. Delicious, but the color changes to an unsightly brown during heat treatment. Although this is the trouble with all red cabbages. She is beautiful in salads.

Faberge cabbage was created by the agricultural company "Aelita"

Red Dynasty F1

The taste of this red cabbage is also praised, but not as often as Faberge. Red Dynasty is a hybrid of the Dutch company Monsanto. The head of cabbage is round, weighing about 2.5 kg, does not crack due to the fact that it is not too dense inside. A cabbage stump of normal length, reaching the middle of the head of cabbage.

Noteworthy is the type of bush: the leaves grow vertically upward, and not to the sides, as in most cabbages. It turns out that Red Dynasty is compact, takes up little space in the garden, the land is used more efficiently. Judging by the bulk seed packages in online stores, this is a professional hybrid for industrial cultivation. And as you know, farmers will not grow bad cabbage.

Red Dynasty cabbage leaves grow vertically, the rosette is compact

Ludmila F1

Hybrid Lyudmila also earned positive feedback from Runet users. The breeders of the "Sedek" agricultural firm have worked on its creation, and for good reason. Gardeners call this cabbage one of the best among red cabbage and recommend it for cultivation. The bush grows beautifully, decorated with wavy blue leaves, the head of cabbage is round and dense, weighing up to 2.4 kg. Even professional tasters from the State Sort Commission rated the taste as "excellent".

Externally, Lyudmila looks like an ordinary white cabbage, but purple on the cut of the forks

Boxer

Gardeners appreciate not only the taste of their vegetables, but also their beauty. The Boxer has both qualities. Having admired the bush, consisting of curly leaves with a silvery shade, during the summer, you can taste a juicy and dense head of cabbage in the fall. This variety is also mentioned on the forums. The forks grow round and weigh about 1.6 kg.

Cabbage Boxer has opaque leaves with wavy edges, have a silvery waxy coating

When choosing seeds, read carefully the description on the package. Producers are often cunning, as the ripening dates indicate the number of days from the planting of seedlings, and not from the emergence of seedlings. So, a medium or late variety may seem early ripening. And in fact, the age of the seedlings must be added to the indicated figures - on average, 40–45 days.

Mid-season varieties and hybrids

This category includes cabbages that ripen about 20-30 days later than early ones. And since the growing season lasts longer, it is logical to expect larger heads of cabbage. But this rule does not always work. The purpose of mid-season is universal: preparation of fresh salads, fermentation. Can be stored in winter, but medium red cabbages are inferior to late ones in terms of keeping quality.

Kalybos

The undoubted leader among mid-season, and indeed all red cabbages - Kalibos. He is praised in almost every forum discussion dedicated to this culture. Gardeners like everything:

  1. The unusual shape of the head of cabbage is conical, pointed at the crown.
  2. The beauty of a bush that looks like a flower: the leaves are green, wavy, curly, they grow luxuriantly, and a bright drop-head of cabbage rises in the center.
  3. High yield, in different years it is 20-60% higher than that of other red cabbage.
  4. The taste is excellent: the leaves inside are sweet, juicy, tender.
  5. Resistance to disease and temperature extremes.

And delicious, and beautiful, and fruitful Kalibos cabbage

Kalibos was bred in the Czech Republic, on the lands of the Moravoseed company, and the Moscow company Semko-Junior filed an application for registration of the variety in Russia. The weight of the head of cabbage is small - 1.5–2 kg, but due to its elongated shape and some looseness, it looks large and attractive. Farmers are happy to grow the variety for sale.

Mars

Another cute red cabbage variety from Moravoseed. It seems that the Czechs have decided to pamper gardeners with a variety of shapes and colors. The entire bush consists of reddish-purple leaves. The head of cabbage is painted in the same color, which, by the way, has a shape flattened from the poles. However, the weight of the fork is small - 1.3–1.5 kg, medium density, does not crack. The plant is compact, you can plant seedlings thicker.

Mars cabbage even has red outer leaves.

Topaz

An old variety whose origins are already forgotten. Nevertheless, cabbage continues to be grown and praised. Topaz is the result of German selection, it is not registered in Russia. However, the seeds are sold throughout the country, including Siberia. Belarusian and Ukrainian seed companies are actively involved in the spread of the variety. Despite the relatively early ripening period (110–120 days from germination), this cabbage grows large - up to 2.5 kg and can be stored all winter. Heads of cabbage are dense, while not cracking, well transported, great for fresh salads.

Late and mid-late storage varieties

Mainly late varieties have high keeping quality. Heads of cabbage harvested before frost, dried and packed in plastic wrap can be stored until May-June. Of course, they are suitable for fresh salads, and for pickling, and for any other dishes where red cabbage is appropriate. Ripening period - 140-150 days or more.

Gako

This is a very old variety of the Moscow Region selection, bred by the VNIISSOK Institute, registered in 1943. Gako is mentioned by gardeners paired with Kalibos. The varieties are called the most suitable for fermentation. The description of Gako from the producers is very short, but in the State Register it does not exist at all, as if everyone should already know this ancient cabbage. Heads of cabbage are purple, round, dense, weigh 1.5–2 kg, do not crack, tolerate transportation well, and can be stored for a long time.

A very old variety Gako is widespread throughout the post-Soviet space.

Garanci F1

The hybrid is actively advertised by Ukrainian farmers and has become the hero of videos. Garanci is grown on an industrial scale, it easily tolerates heat, does not get sick, pleases with good transportability and a long shelf life - until May. A head of cabbage, like that of Faberge, is elongated-oval, dense, weighing up to 2 kg, beetroot color. The hybrid was developed by the French company Clause.

Rexoma F1

The modern hybrid of the Dutch selection was entered into the State Register of the Russian Federation by Zwaan Zaadteelt. This is the largest cabbage of all of the above. Heads of cabbage are poured up to 3.5 kg, round in shape, with a dense consistency. Leaves match them - large, bumpy, with wavy edges. Some gardeners even compare them to the ears of an elephant. Plants will require a lot of space in the garden, but this is justified. Rexoma is tasty, juicy, well kept.

Red cabbage for regions

All varieties and hybrids listed in the State Register of the Russian Federation are approved for cultivation in any region of our country. Favorable conditions for the growth of cabbage are relatively cool days with a temperature of +15 ... +20 ° C, it should rain at least once a week. These descriptions correspond to the climate prevailing in most of Russia: in the middle zone, in the Urals, in Eastern and Western Siberia. However, there are unique characteristics that allow different varieties to be more productive in a particular region.

Varieties and hybrids for the Moscow region

In the Moscow region and throughout the Central region, varieties bred by local firms will develop perfectly: Aelita, Sedek, Gavrish, Poisk, etc. Here, in their homeland, the positive qualities are shown to the maximum extent by those already mentioned: Faberge, Lyudmila, Boxer, Gako, as well as:

  • Vanguard F1 is displayed at the station. Timofeeva. This is a mid-season hybrid for fresh consumption. Leaves are large, blue-green, oval heads of cabbage, weighing 2.2 kg.

A notable feature of Avangard cabbage is its large blue-green leaves

  • Amethyst - early grade from Euro-seeds LLC. The rosette consists of medium-sized dark blue leaves. The head is round, weighs 1.5 kg, suitable for short-term storage.

Amethyst grows in a compact bush, small forks

  • Victory from the Poisk firm has excellent taste, has a salad purpose. The plant is mid-season. Leaves are of normal size, blue-violet, with a barely noticeable waxy coating. Head of cabbage broadly ovate, grows up to 2.1 kg.

A distinctive feature of Victory - bright blue-purple leaves

  • The Firebird is a tasty and healthy product of the Aelita agricultural company. The variety belongs to the mid-season, the head is round and large, grows up to 3.5 kg. The bush is very voluminous, the leaves are blue-violet with lilac veins, large ones grow horizontally.

Firebird - fabulous cabbage from "Aelita"

On the lands of the Moscow Region, other varieties have also been bred: Zeus, Stone Head, Mikhnevskaya, Gray Dove, Habibi, Juno.

Varieties and hybrids for Siberia and the Urals

In Siberia, with its cool summers and frequent rains, it would seem that the most place for moisture-loving and heat-intolerant cabbage. The climate is approximately the same in the main part of the Urals. Spring is late here, and autumn is early and damp, above zero temperatures at night are kept from June to September, which means that late varieties will not have time to ripen. Sowing them earlier for seedlings is not an option. Everyone knows how cabbage is stretched out on the windowsill. Without lighting and creating coolness, there will be no sense from early sowing.

In addition, constantly damp soil from frequent rains is a source of fungal infection. This means that in this region it is necessary to grow early and mid-season cabbages that are resistant to temperature extremes and diseases. Among those already described, such requirements are met by everyone's beloved Calebos, who is loyal to dampness, low and high temperatures.

Siberia with a rainy autumn is my region, so I cannot refrain from commenting on early Faberge. Heads of cabbage, of course, have ripened. But in the fall, during harvesting, on one of ten existing ones, I found signs of mucous bacteriosis, that is, on the cut of the stump, it was clear that the head of cabbage began to rot from the inside. Perhaps she overexposed and the heads of this variety need to be cut not in the fall, but in the summer for salads.

What red cabbages are suitable for growing in the region, suggests the online gardeners club "Sady Sibiri":

  • The stone head is a very old variety from the Moscow Region VNIISSOK. Spreading bush, vegetation period - 120-145 days. The head is really small (up to 1.5 kg) and very dense, for this reason it can crack.

The stone head cannot be overexposed in the garden and poured, its heads are prone to cracking

  • Example F1 is a Dutch early maturing hybrid, the opposite of the Stone Head. The rosette of leaves is compact, and the head of cabbage, on the contrary, is very large - up to 4 kg. The cabbage is high-yielding, with an excellent taste, the heads of cabbage do not crack.

The Primero hybrid is distinguished by an incredible combination of early maturity and a large head size

  • Auto F1 is also a Dutch cabbage, widespread in Ukraine, although it has increased cold resistance, which is what is needed in Siberia. Small heads of cabbage - up to 1.5 kg, juicy, tasty, do not crack, can be stored for 4–5 months. Agronomists warn that Autoro is not resistant to keel, which develops in acidic soils.

The Dutch hybrid Aitoro is widespread in Ukraine, but grows well in Siberia.

In addition, those already familiar to us are suitable for growing in the Urals and Siberia: Avangard F1, Lyudmila F1, Boxer, Gako, Mars.

Varieties and hybrids for the Northwest

For cultivation in this region, it is worth looking for local varieties, eaten or tested by St. Petersburg breeders. The following are registered in the State Register:

  • Anthracite is a mid-season variety with purple leaves and an oval head of cabbage weighing 2.3 kg.

Anthracite - a beautiful cabbage with oval purple heads

  • Renitop is an early cabbage with a voluminous, spreading rosette of large purple leaves. Round head of cabbage, up to 2 kg, with good taste.

The Renitop cabbage has purple leaves, a medium-sized head of cabbage, round

The originator of both varieties is Agroplaneta (St. Petersburg), the company is responsible for their purity and safety.

It rains a lot in the North-West, so it is better to grow here the same hybrids that are recommended for Siberia, that is, they are resistant to diseases and bad weather.

Varieties and hybrids for the South of Russia

The modern South of Russia includes the South and North Caucasian federal districts. The climate here is varied, but spring comes to all territories early, autumn is warm, the growing season lasts 170-190 days. You can grow cabbage of any ripening period, and by sowing directly into the ground. However, residents of the Black Sea coast should choose varieties that are resistant to dampness (Kalibos, Primo), and gardeners in the southeastern part of the region should choose drought-resistant varieties (Topaz, Garsi).

Throughout the territory in summer, the temperature often exceeds +30 ° C. In such heat, heads of cabbage do not tie, and if they have already tied, they do not grow. Cabbage freezes and waits for favorable weather. You need to look for heat-resistant hybrids, such as:

  • Summer debut - an early variety originally from Denmark, pleases with dense and juicy heads of cabbage weighing 1.5–2 kg.

The heads of cabbage of the Summer Debut are medium-sized, but they are poured by the middle of summer

  • It is not for nothing that the ruby of Czech breeding has spread throughout all regions of the Russian Federation. Like Kalibos, it is resistant to high humidity and temperatures unfavorable for cabbage. The variety is mid-season, dense head of cabbage, weighing 1–2 kg, well stored until January.

Ruby is a beautiful bright head of cabbage framed by purple leaves

  • Climaro is a Dutch late hybrid suitable for winter storage. The rosette of leaves is raised, purple, the head of cabbage grows up to 3 kg.

Klimaro hybrid from Holland ties large heads of cabbage in the south

Video: a story about the benefits of red cabbage

The varieties of red cabbage cannot be counted. There are already beloved ones, like Calebos, Faberge, Gako. New products of our and foreign selection constantly appear. And a wide choice is an opportunity to choose the best for your taste and pleasing harvest in your climate.

The best varieties of carrots for winter storage

It is difficult for novice gardeners to navigate among the huge number of carrot varieties. But there are hits that have been performing well for a long time.

Touchon carrots are one such option. It is a popular early maturing variety with excellent taste.

It is easy to care for and suitable for planting in Russia.

To get a good harvest, it is not enough just to sow seeds. Different varieties have certain requirements for soil, watering, moisture and other conditions. By spending a little time studying the characteristics of a species, a farmer can significantly improve germination and yield.

Description of the variety

Fruits are cylindrical, elongated, even, rounded tip. The surface is smooth, small eyes are visible. The color is bright, red-orange. A fully ripe vegetable reaches 20 cm in length and weighs 80-150 grams. The core does not differ in color.

Tushon tastes sweet. sugars in the composition from 5 to 8%. Carotene in fruits from 11.9 to 17.8 mg (per 100 g of carrots). The pulp is juicy. These features make the species popular for processing into baby food and juices.

The species belongs to the early and can be used for growing bunch products. Whether it is possible to plant carrots before winter depends on the individual conditions of the farmer. There is no prohibition in the description of the variety, and many gardeners successfully carry out winter plantings.

The author's variety was bred in France. Overseas breeders pay special attention to the appearance of the fruit, and Tushon is no exception. Roots look good, which is important when selling.

Touchon belongs to the Amsterdam cultivar. Its distinctive features are tender and sweet fruits. They do not tolerate transportation and storage, are intended to be eaten after collection, or for processing. But the simplicity of cultivation and productivity at a height.

Landing region

Touchon is a versatile variety that grows well throughout the country. Optimal for central Russia and the Volga region. In these regions, the vegetable shows all the declared characteristics well.

In the rest of the country, care adjustments may be required. It depends on the climatic conditions. In northern regions, carrots are planted later and may take longer to mature to technical maturity. Conversely, in the southern parts of Russia, you can plant a vegetable earlier.

It is good for beginner gardeners to consult with experienced farmers in order to adjust the planting plan in time according to regional characteristics and grow a good harvest.

Ripening terms

The variety belongs to the early ones. Such carrots are the first to ripen after winter, and they are not stored, but immediately eaten. Touchon can be eaten within 60 days after the first shoots. The fruits reach full technical maturity a little longer, 80-90 days.

Touchon can be used to obtain beam products.

This crop has not reached full technical maturity - the very first young carrots, small in size and delicate taste.

It is called sheaf, because after collection it is tied into bundles. To harvest carrots as early as possible, you need to plant them in the fall. Touchon is suitable for sowing before winter.

Yield

The yield of the species is 4-5 kg per sq.m. This is a good indicator, and I call the variety a high-yielding one.

When planting, it must be borne in mind that Touchon is not very much stored. Therefore, they plant as much as they can eat in order to prevent spoilage of the product.

Planting and leaving

Touchon is planted in a bright open place. Before this, the seeds are soaked for a day in water or a ready-made growth accelerator. Then it is mixed with sand in a 2: 1 ratio. This is done to evenly distribute seeds in the soil.

The seeds are sown to a depth of 2-3 cm. To prevent the vegetables from growing too densely, they try to maintain a couple of cm distance between the seeds. After planting, the garden is watered abundantly.

Experienced gardeners mulch the soil. This is not a necessary step, but it simplifies the further care of the plant. The bed is covered with a thin layer of straw, peat or compost. So the earth retains moisture longer, and crops are less susceptible to weathering.

  • watering
  • thinning. Too tight planting does not give root crops enough space to grow, so some of them are periodically pulled out
  • weeding. The bed is regularly checked for weeds, and if necessary, they are removed.
  • loosening. So that the roots get enough air, they loosen the soil with special tools. This can be combined with thinning or watering.

Touchon is planted in open ground. It grows best in loose soil with good drainage. Sandy soil, loam is ideal. If the soil on the site is heavy and clayey, you need to prepare it.

Farmers use sand and sawdust to lighten the soil. They are added to the soil and thoroughly loosened to mix evenly with the ground.

Sowing times can vary by purpose and region. In the southern regions, seeds are planted earlier.

The main landmark is that seedlings die at temperatures below 3 grams. Therefore, the landing is done when the average daily temperature is above 3 grams.

Or in such a way that seedlings appear after the establishment of heat.

Early sowing of seeds is carried out from mid-April to early May. The period of full ripening is 80-90 days, which means that carrots can be obtained by August.

Summer planting is carried out in June and is harvested at the end of September. Podzimny sowing is arranged in October-November. Carrots will ripen in spring. The main thing is that the seedlings do not appear before the onset of frost, otherwise the planting will die.

The carrots are watered frequently and abundantly. Sufficient water is the key to juiciness and sweet taste. The first week after planting the seeds, the vegetable is watered every day. Then the frequency is reduced.

The frequency of watering is regulated depending on the amount of precipitation in the region and the type of soil. If the soil is poured too much, it is likely to ruin the crop.

The variety has good resistance to pests and diseases.

Taking proper care of your garden beds will help prevent common growing problems. If you thin out vegetables in time and loosen the soil, avoid excessive moisture, additional measures can not be taken.

Collection and storage

The crop is harvested as it ripens. Root vegetables should be of the correct size, sweet and juicy. Ripe vegetables are dug out carefully so as not to damage.

For storage, root crops are cleaned of excess soil, rinsed with water if necessary and laid out in a cool dry place. Touchon is not intended for long-term storage, therefore, root crops are immediately eaten or used for processing.

The vegetable is very popular because of its many virtues. Gardeners note the following advantages:

  • rapid maturation
  • high yield
  • a combination of beautiful fruits with excellent taste
  • good resistance to blooming, cracking, fungal diseases.

The disadvantages of farmers include a short shelf life of fruits. This is typical for early maturing varieties. For long-term storage, separate varieties have been bred, so this cannot be considered a significant disadvantage of Touchon.

Touchon is a versatile variety that is loved for its ease of care and good taste. Even novice farmers can plant and groom easily. The vegetable is optimal for early harvest and processing.

To date, breeders have bred many varieties of carrots. Therefore, it will not be difficult for a gardener to choose a suitable variety.

Some varieties are predominantly sown in early spring, while others are great for sowing before winter. There are species that are used for long-term storage, and some give higher yields.

But the most important thing is the high content of sugar and carotene, because most people love tasty and sweet carrots.

Below are the varieties of carrots with photos and descriptions, which have been very popular among Russian gardeners for several years:

  • Nantes.
  • Shantane.
  • Emperor.

For more efficient ventilation, the installation of vents in the greenhouse cover is provided.

The size of additional vents in the Flora-4.5m model is approximately 2m x 1m. Manual opening.

The greenhouse can be equipped with vents in each section, or not have vents at all.

The cost of a manual vent = 3 300 rubles.

The traditional foundation for greenhouses is strip. It can be made of concrete, blocks or timber. Each of them has advantages and disadvantages.

Quite often, a beam with a section of 100 x 100 mm is used, since it is a relatively inexpensive material and it is quite easy to install it.

The connection of the frame with such a foundation is carried out using the corners included in the kit.

We offer a basement part (FLORA), which includes stainless steel supports and corrugated sheet cladding, which is compact, durable and at a reasonable price. Due to the depth of 0.35 m, the profiled sheet will protect the soil inside the greenhouse from weeds and excess moisture.

The cost of the basement part depends on the overall dimensions of the greenhouse. For the most popular greenhouse 4.5m x 8m, the cost will be:

- 3 300 rubles. (basement part from a bar 100 x 100)

- 8 700 rubles. (basement part FLORA)

For fixing polycarbonate to the frame, a good solution is the use of galvanized washers with an increased diameter.

An end profile is required to protect the end surfaces of the side polycarbonate sheets from dust and dirt.

For FLORA-4.5m, a set of galvanized washers is attached free of charge.

The process of assembling the end walls is quite complicated: assembly of the frame, installation of doors, sheathing with polycarbonate.

This process takes a lot of time. End walls are usually ordered assembled.

For the FLORA-4.5m model, the assembly of the end walls is free of charge.

For ease of use, a special lowered sill has been developed in the door area, which will allow avoiding constant stepping over a high foundation and carrying a trolley through the doorway. Naturally, the installation of such a threshold leads to changes in the dimensions of the foundation, which must be taken into account when constructing it, especially when pouring a concrete foundation.

You can order such a nut in two end walls, or in one, more convenient for use.

The cost of the nut is 3,000 rubles.

Specify the unloading point with the cursor or enter the address in the "Find" line:

When ordering this greenhouse with assembled end walls, the delivery cost will be increased by 1,000 rubles.
