Netting For Lawns – How To Use Landscape Netting

By: Bonnie L. Grant, Certified Urban Agriculturist

Grass and other ground covers planted on erosion prone areas or unprotected windy sites need a little help sticking around until germination. Netting for lawns provides this defense and shelters the seed until it sprouts. What is lawn netting? There are several types of netting for landscaping, which are designed to safeguard the seed. Whether you chose jute, straw or coconut fiber coverings, knowing how to use landscape netting helps ensure success when straight seeding a large area that might be compromised by vigorous weather.

What is Lawn Netting?

Erosion prone areas benefit from plant covers that help hold soil and preserve the landscape. Landscape netting for grass and other seeded plants safeguard the seeds as they germinate, increasing the number of plants that will grow. It is important to prepare the seed bed as the manufacturer recommends and provide adequate moisture, but all your hard work will be for naught if you don’t shield the seeds and they blow away or irrigation rinses them off. There are natural fiber varieties and plastic mesh which offers more durable and longer protection.

Types of Netting for Landscaping

Jute – The most commonly used netting is jute. Jute is a natural fiber with strength and biodegradability. It is a ropy material woven in a grid-like pattern that you stake across the seed bed. It makes natural landscape netting for grass and decomposes within a season.

Coir – Coir or coconut fiber is a popular choice. It is the basis for some soil amendments, pot and planter liners and other garden uses. The fiber is sometimes bonded to plastic mesh as a longer lasting alternative.

Straw – Another type of netting for lawns is straw. This common material has long been laid over compromised sites to help prevent erosion, protect plant roots, enhance moisture retention and prevent weeds. When it is combined with other materials in a web-like structure, it allows plants to peek through as they grow but stabilizes the soil to prevent seeds and baby plants from blowing or flooding away.

All netting is classed by the size of the grid opening. Type A has a 65 % open area, while Type B has an opening 50% of the grid size. Type C has the smallest, opening at only 39 % and is used after seedlings have emerged.

How to Use Landscape Netting

Most exposed sites will benefit from landscape netting. Once you have prepared the seedbed and sown the seeds, you simply drape the fabric or mesh over the exposed area. Start at one end and roll it out evenly, using soil staples or stakes to hold it into the soil.

In some instances, you will seed after you have used the mesh to hold the prepared soil in place. To do this, shovel 4 inches (10 cm.) of soil over the mesh and rake out evenly. Then plant your seed as usual.

Compostable lawn netting will disappear after a while. Most plastic mesh is left in place as a permanent protection on hills and cliff areas. Not all sites need netting for lawns but it is a useful tool in exposed areas.

Biodegradable jute twine is an efficient form of grass netting and can stand up to most environmental planting areas with continued water flow. Jute matting decomposes naturally through high winds over time. It is often used to help establish the grass seed through germination until seedling growth.

Fiber mulch blankets are bonded with straw to create longer-lasting grass seed netting. They provide protection from soil erosion and give plants the opportunity and time to successfully establish themselves within the soil.

  • Grass seed netting -- a valuable tool to protect newly planted grass seeds -- acts as a stabilization barrier.

This has long been popular in the garden to protect plants, especially fruit and vegetables, from pest attack and bad weather, but with so many different types of netting it can be confusing which garden netting you need.

Let us help you, with some simple advice about different types of netting and how it can be used to protect your plants.

WHAT'S BEEN DAMAGING YOUR PLANTS?

It's important to 'Know Your Enemy' - understanding what has been attacking your plants is key to stopping it in the future. Determining whether it's birds, aphids or butterflies is the first step to helping you choose the right netting.

BIRD NETTING

Birds can decimate fruit crops, taking the ripe fruit before you've had a chance to pick it - so what is the best and most cost effective way to protect your fruit bushes and plants?

Bird Netting, also known as Bird Stop Netting or Anti Bird Netting, has a 20mm mesh designed to stop even small birds. The netting can be draped over frames, cages and hoops to protect your plants. Our best selling fruit cages use bird netting on the roof and sides to protect fruit crops in the cage.

Designed to stop birds but let pollinators through the mesh, bird netting is available in a range of sizes and with value packs can work out as a very cost effective solution.

Pigeons a problem? There is specific Pigeon Netting available which is a much stronger knotted netting with a bigger mesh size designed specifically to stop pigeons getting to your crops!

BUTTERFLY NETTING

It's not so much the butterflies that cause gardeners problems, it's the fact that they lay their eggs on the leaves of plants which hatch into very greedy caterpillars.

Caterpillars can chew their way through plants quicker than you would expect, and if a butterfly lays it eggs on one of your plants then you can quickly see your precious crop destroyed.

Butterfly Netting has 7mm mesh size, which stops butterflies getting through to your plants. This can also be put over frames, cages and hoops to protect your plants - many people cover their fruit cages with butterfly netting to further protect their plants.

INSECT MESH

Designed to protect plants from smaller pests but will also stop butterflies and birds, insect mesh is available in 2 mesh sizes - standard to stop the majority of pests and ultra fine to stop even the tiniest of pests.

The mesh can be draped over plants to protect them from minute pests and can also be put over hoops to create cloche tunnels.

If Carrot Root Fly is a problem, then creating an insect mesh barrier around the carrots will help protect your plants from this damaging pest - our Carrot Root Fly Screen is just the answer.

Insect mesh will also offer some weather protection against heavy rain and hail and will also provide some shelter from high winds.

WINDBREAK & SHADE NETTING

It's not only pests that can damage plants, the weather can also wreak havoc in the garden. Strong winds can damage plants and even strong rays from the sun can scorch plants, expecially in greeenhouses.

Windbreak netting is a simple, cost effective way to stop taller plants blowing over and preventing damage. Position the netting to act like a screen around plants and the mesh netting will act as a wind break protecting your plants.

The suns rays can scorch plants in the middle of summer, especially in greenhouses, and Shade Netting is a simple solution to protect plants from damaging rays. Shade netting can be fixed inside or outside the greenhouse and can also be used as a screen around plants outside if they are prone to scorching.

FLEECE

Frost can be very damaging in the garden, especially early and late in the growing season and just one frost can be enough to kill some plants, so it's important to be prepared.

Garden Fleece is a great way to quickly protect plants. The Fleece can be draped over plants to create an insulating layer, protecting them when the mercury plunges.

Make sure you buy a good quality fleece though, check for UV stabilised and at least 30g weight as this will last. Lower quality fleece can quickly degrade and you will be replacing it each season.

Pot Jackets and Plant Jackets are also a great way to protect plants in cold weather. These can be fixed around the plant or pot to insulate the plant when temperatures plummet.

There are obviously some pests that we can't stop with netting, such as slugs and snails, for these types of pests we would advise using biological control such as Nemaslug nematodes. These are a safe and effective way to kill pests with no harmful by products making their way into the soil. We have a range of nematode products for different pests - have a look at our Nematode Range today.

Hopefully the advice helps you choose the right netting for your garden, it can be a very cost effective way of protecting your plants and ensuring a bigger, healthier harvest without the use of chemicals!

How to Use Garden Fabric in Spring

Prepare the soil and seed the area or plant your transplants. Place the GardenQuilt or All-Purpose fabric directly on the ground or drape it over hoops. We recommend using support hoops for larger transplants, such as peppers or tomatoes, or when covering maturing crops later in the season. If you lay the row cover directly on the soil, do not stretch the material tight. Leave some slack in the center to allow for expansion as the plants develop. As the crop grows, it will push the cover up. Mound soil over the edges of the fabric to keep the cover in place or, fold the edges under 3″ and anchor it with Tall Earth Staples by pushing them through the fabric and into the soil.

If you are using support hoops, be sure to pull the cover taut over the hoops and bury the edges well to keep the fabric secure during windy days. You can also clip the fabric to the hoops with clothespins if wind is a problem.

Seedlings should be monitored for moisture and fertilizer needs. Pull back or remove the cover for thinning or weeding.

As the weather warms up, check your plants to make sure they're not overheating. This is especially important when it comes to cool-weather plants, such as lettuce and broccoli. Remove the cover if you see signs of overheating, such as wilting, leaf damage and/or blossom drop.

Once your seedlings have adapted to the outdoors and the threat of frost has passed, you may remove the All-Purpose Garden Fabric or GardenQuilt from the beds. For insect protection throughout the growing season, use Summerweight Fabric, which can be left in place until harvest.

Pollination — Don't Forget the Bees!

Crops such as peas, strawberries, beans, pumpkins and squash require pollination to produce a harvest. If these crops are still covered with fabric when they begin to flower, remove or temporarily lift fabric from the beds during the day to allow bees to do their work. Self-pollinating plants, such as tomatoes, can be left covered. However, be aware of the temperature under the covers. At temperatures above 85 degrees F., tomato pollen may become sterile and peppers will not set fruit. You may need to lift the covers during the day to release excess heat.

Insect Protection

Garden fabric will keep most insect pests away from your crops as long as plants are completely covered and the edges are securely pinned to the ground. They’ll block aphids, potato beetles, Japanese beetles, grasshoppers, leaf miners, cabbage worms, root maggots, and some vine borers.

Pest problems can still occur if insect eggs were laid before the fabric was applied, or insects emerge from the soil. Insects may also have been introduced when new seedlings were transplanted. A careful examination of the leaves' undersides will indicate insect activity. If an infestation has occurred, spray with an organic pesticide, or remove the infected plants. Replace covers to keep future insects out. Garden fabrics help break the life cycle of many insects and can help prevent re-infestation the following season.
